I had a chance to learn about web technology in class and it astounds me how different it is defined now. I mean it is furiously changing at so short a time. Looking at Google's paradigm and all I can say is whoever thought of utilizing platforms and offering it to the world is a stroke of genius. The company itself is revolutionary as to how they are able to utilize an old scheme to a new world. Note too that Google came at a time when the internet is at its peak adding this to their utmost advantage. They have the idea, they have the platform and all they need is users. What better way to spread the Google love but by recommendation using the world wide web. It started as a search engine and now it has covered a very large area on advertising. But it doesn't stop there. Google also knows they have to gradually change and they need applications that already have solid ideas.. solid, selling ideas. So why not merge? Brilliant idea! Now, they have Youtube, AdSense, Blogger and others. I'm pretty sure they're not stopping there.
Now how about the competition? Well.. unfortunately, no other company has reached the same optimum as Google, at least not yet. But at this point, Facebook may seem to be catching up. It does have an entirely different structure coming from the social network category but they already have the consumers. And they are already starting to create and build on their platform which they are also including the profitable world of advertising.
The basic idea of "have other people do the nitty, gritty details" and usage of "already tested solutions" are two of strategies that's overly used by web-related companies, as I see it. Just look at web services, APIs, apps serving almost all problems. Its a "use me" appeal by any company that serves a service or a platform. It's just like being a superstar. If nobody wants you, you fade out.
